Bao Buns with Gyros, Tzatziki and Asian Sauces!
Juicy Greek gyros tucked into soft, fluffy bao buns, paired with a mix of sweet-spicy and umami-rich Asian sauces, such as chili garlic sauce and/or sweet chili dipping sauce.
We start by marinating the meat for the gyros, mixing olive oil, garlic, oregano, paprika, lemon juice, salt, and pepper in a bowl. Add the chicken or pork, toss well, and let it rest so it absorbs all the flavours. Then cook the meat in a very hot pan or grill pan until it develops a deep golden color on the outside while staying juicy on the inside.
At the same time, we prepare the bao buns by mixing flour, yeast, sugar, and salt, then adding lukewarm water and a little oil, kneading until a soft dough forms. We let it rise until it doubles in size, then divide it into small portions and shape them into their signature form. After a short rest, we steam them until they become light and fluffy.
For the tzatziki, we grate the cucumber and squeeze out as much moisture as possible. We then mix it with strained yogurt, garlic, olive oil, a little vinegar or lemon juice, and salt, creating a fresh and well-balanced sauce. Alternatively, you can use ready-made tzatziki for convenience.
Once everything is ready, we open the warm bao buns and fill them with the juicy gyros. We top them with tzatziki and, if we like, add some fresh vegetables for extra freshness and texture. Finish with the Asian sauces for an extra boost of flavour and intensity!
The final result is a dish that brings together the familiar Greek flavors of gyros with the soft, fluffy texture of bao buns and the refreshing touch of tzatziki, creating a well-balanced and delicious fusion street food experience.
